Try Premium for PKR0 Meet the hiring team Jarrod Barker 3rd Founder / CEO at RealSimGear Inc Job poster Message About the job RealSimGear is a San Diego based designer and manufacturer of advanced flight simulation components and systems. We believe flying is safer when pilots practice more, develop true mastery of their skills, procedures and the airplane and that everyone can benefit from this with the right access to great flight simulation. We do this by designing, building, shipping and supporting world class simulator products that are the most elegant, most reliable sims available for the home environment, and commercial operators. We are all about harnessing the very latest consumer electronics technology to the field of flight simulation and we believe that better access to high fidelity, high quality simulation will make a significant difference to pilot confidence and safety. Everyone in the RealSimGear team plays a role in helping to deliver towards this mission. We’re looking for an experienced Software Engineer to help design, build, and maintain the software systems that power our simulated avionics, aircraft, and hardware integrations. In this role, you’ll work across a wide range of software domains: simulated avionics and aircraft systems, plugins and device-communication software, software update systems, telemetry applications, and supporting tools. Our team is fully remote and highly self-directed, with a flexible schedule that requires alignment across U.S. time zones and occasional overlap with Australian time zones (some meetings may occur in the early evening US Pacific time). You’ll be trusted to make sound technical decisions, communicate clearly, and ship reliable software to real customers. Key Responsibilities Design, implement, and unit-test high-performance code in C/C++ for simulated avionics and aircraft systems. Develop and maintain cross-platform plugins for popular flight simulation platforms (e.g., X-Plane) Collaborate with the Hardware Engineering team to define, implement, and troubleshoot device communication protocols (e.g., USB, Serial) for new RealSimGear hardware products. Own the end-to-end reliability and performance of key software systems Participate in code reviews to maintain high quality and adherence to best practices across the codebase. Required Qualifications 2-4+ years of professional software engineering experience delivering production software to customers Strong experience with object-oriented programming, including C/C++ Ability to design, implement, test, and maintain complex software systems Experience working with existing codebases and improving them over time Interest in or experience with aviation and/or flight simulation Ability to self-manage with minimal direct oversight in a highly autonomous team environment Strong communication skills across multiple formats, including written documentation, asynchronous chat, live video calls, and occasional in-person meetings Experience debugging and troubleshooting issues across different platforms and environments Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and collaborative development workflows Preferred Qualifications Experience with Conan or other C/C++ package managers Knowledge of aviation data standards such as ARINC 424 Experience developing plugins or integrations for simulation platforms Familiarity with aeronautical engineering concepts Familiarity with hardware or device-communication software (USB, HID, serial, networking, CAN, etc.) Knowledge of cloud-based software infrastructure and services Experience with CI/CD pipelines, build systems, and automated testing Background in performance-sensitive or real-time systems Demonstrable professional or personal experience in aviation or flight simulation software development RealSimGear values practical engineering, clear thinking, and curiosity about how complex systems behave in the real world. If you enjoy building software that interfaces closely with both hardware and simulation environments, and you like owning your work end-to-end, you’ll fit right in. This role is ideally suited to someone with a passion for aviation, either as a pilot or flight sim enthusiast. Our head office is located directly across from Montgomery Field in San Deigo, California and we encourage time for flying or the pursuit of flight training. We offer a competitive salary package which includes exceptional medical, dental and vision coverage along with 401k program and generous PTO. Importantly, this is a role where you will make a real difference, you will see the direct result of your work and will experience your designs produced and shipped to customers all over the world. If this role sounds like something you would be interested in, we would very much encourage you to apply for a confidential discussion.
