The Role We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer who will serve as a critical early technical hire at Coastal Measures. This person will take meaningful ownership over large development projects—including scoping, project management, and delivery—while also contributing deep technical expertise across our stack. You’ll work across backend systems, cloud infrastructure, AI and machine learning features, database architecture, and customer-facing interfaces, with a strong hand in shaping both our SaaS platform and our technical culture. We are based in Portland and Kittery, Maine, and we strongly prefer a candidate who can work on-site in a hybrid capacity. That said, we’re open to remote arrangements for an exceptional candidate who brings everything we’re looking for. Key Responsibilities Design, build, and maintain scalable backend services using Python and PHP/Laravel Independently scope, plan, and lead multi-week development projects from initial requirements through delivery, including managing timelines and technical tradeoffs Design, implement, and maintain APIs that support internal and external applications Develop and integrate AI and machine learning capabilities, including classical ML/DL algorithms, Large Language Models (LLMs), and agentic AI systems (multi-step agents, tool use, orchestration) Collaborate on UI/UX design and implementation to build polished, customer-facing web interfaces that are intuitive and production-ready Own and expand the business logic layer of our SaaS platform, translating complex domain and customer requirements into reliable, scalable software Own platform observability and monitoring (e.g., Grafana, CloudWatch), ensuring visibility into system health and performance Design database architecture and strategy; write efficient SQL queries and own ongoing database design, schema decisions, and performance Deploy, monitor, and scale applications on AWS Use shell scripting and automation to improve development, deployment, and operational workflows Participate in architectural decisions, code reviews, and technical mentorship Balance rapid prototyping with production-grade engineering Required Qualifications 3+ years of professional software engineering experience Strong experience with Python and PHP (Laravel) Practical experience working with LLMs and agentic AI systems (e.g., prompt engineering, fine-tuning, application integration, agent orchestration, tool use) Experience collaborating on UI/UX design and front-end implementation, with a focus on usability and accessibility Solid understanding of AWS services (e.g., EC2, S3, RDS, Lambda, ECS) Proficiency in SQL and strong relational database design skills, including schema design, query optimization, and database architecture decisions Experience building or maintaining a SaaS platform, with an understanding of multi-tenancy, customer-facing product concerns, and business logic complexity Strong software engineering fundamentals: clean code, testing, version control (Git), CI/CD pipelines, and system design Ability to work independently and take ownership in a startup environment Nice-to-Have Qualifications Experience in Blue Tech, climate tech, ocean science, maritime, or geospatial systems Experience deploying ML models to production Familiarity with modern front-end frameworks or design systems Startup or early-stage company experience What We Offer Opportunity to work on meaningful technology with real environmental and societal impact High ownership and influence over product and technical direction Collaborative, low-bureaucracy startup culture Competitive salary and equity opportunities Flexible hybrid work environment Requirements added by the job poster • Authorized to work in the United States • No need for visa sponsorship
