About the Role

We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer (MERN Stack) to support the development and scaling of Tropic Travel’s web platforms. This is a part-time, hands-on engineering role for an experienced developer who values clean architecture, ownership, and high-quality production systems.
You will work closely with leadership and product stakeholders to design, build, and improve core features and infrastructure.


Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain scalable applications using the MERN stack (MongoDB, Express.js, React, Node.js)
Build modern, reusable frontend components with React
Develop secure and performant backend services and APIs
Optimize application performance, reliability, and scalability
Collaborate with product and business stakeholders to translate requirements into technical solutions
Participate in architecture decisions and technical planning
Review code and promote engineering best practices
Troubleshoot and resolve production issues as needed


Required Qualifications

5+ years of professional software engineering experience
Strong hands-on experience with the MERN stack
Advanced proficiency in JavaScript and/or TypeScript
Experience building and integrating RESTful APIs
Solid understanding of database design and performance (MongoDB or similar)
Experience with Git and modern development workflows
Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently
Excellent communication skills in a remote environment


Nice to Have

Experience with Next.js or modern React frameworks
Exposure to cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure)
Experience with SaaS, travel-tech, or e-commerce platforms
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, Docker, or DevOps practices


Work Arrangement & Compensation

Part-time: 15–25 hours per week
Fully remote
Flexible working hours with reasonable overlap for collaboration
Compensation: $100 – $130 USD per hour, based on experience
Engagement type: 1099 or W-2 contract, depending on candidate eligibility and location
Contract role with potential for extension based on performance and business needs


Compliance Requirement

Successful candidates must be able to pass a drug screening test as part of engagement requirements.
