This is a full-time (near full-time considered) remote role focused on migrating legacy COBOL-based applications to Python. The selected candidate will be responsible for analyzing existing COBOL code, understanding its business logic, and converting it into clean, maintainable Python applications. The role primarily involves back-end development and integration with an MS SQL Server database. This position requires strong attention to detail to ensure the Python application faithfully replicates the original COBOL system’s functionality. Limited travel (once in a few months) to Washington DC Metro is expected. Open to both W2 and 1099 arrangements. Key Responsibilities: Analyze and evaluate existing COBOL programs and logic Convert COBOL-based application logic into Python Develop and maintain back-end Python code Work with MS SQL Server databases (queries, updates, stored procedures, schema understanding) Ensure accurate migration of data structures and business rules Test and validate converted code to match legacy system behavior Document logic, assumptions, and conversion decisions Qualifications Strong experience in Python programming Working knowledge of COBOL (including reading and understanding legacy code) Experience working with MS SQL Server Experience with back-end development Ability to understand and translate business logic from legacy systems Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to work independently in a remote environment
