About the Role

SpecBooks is seeking a talented and experienced Lead Backend Engineer to drive the evolution of our backend systems and guide our engineering team. This is a key leadership role focused on solving complex technical challenges while fostering a high-performance development environment.



What You'll Do

As the Lead Backend Engineer, you will:

Take ownership of critical development initiatives in our Laravel/PHP codebase.
Architect scalable and maintainable backend solutions.
Set and enforce high technical standards across the team through code reviews, documentation, and best practices.
Provide hands-on mentorship and guidance to backend developers.
Collaborate with engineering leadership to define and execute on our long-term technical roadmap.
Work closely with frontend and product teams to deliver robust, integrated features.


What We're Looking For

We’re looking for someone who brings a strong engineering foundation along with leadership capabilities. Ideal candidates will have:

Advanced experience with modern PHP and Laravel.
Strong system architecture and software design skills.
Proven ability to make sound technical decisions.
Solid grasp of backend fundamentals including RESTful API design, SQL, version control (Git), and containerization.
Previous experience in a leadership or mentorship capacity within an engineering team.


Bonus Points For

Deep expertise in Laravel and familiarity with its broader ecosystem.
Working knowledge of frontend technologies (e.g., JavaScript, Vue, React) to support better cross-functional collaboration.
