Seeking Freelance Website Developer to join our team (Remote, Eastern Time Zone) As a freelance Website Developer, you will play a key role in shaping and maintaining Bellweather’s digital ecosystem. Dedicated exclusively to in-house projects, you will collaborate closely with our Website Director, Head of Strategy, and internal teams to build high-performing CMS experiences (primarily WordPress) that reflect Bellweather’s identity, technical vision, and commitment to excellence. From website enhancements and custom plugin development to performance optimization and maintenance, your work will be instrumental in advancing how Bellweather shows up online and supports internal initiatives. This is a remote position. While we offer flexibility in your day-to-day schedule, availability during Eastern Time Zone business hours is required. Rate: $80-110/hr Key Responsibilities Develop & Optimize: Coding: Write clean, efficient, and well-documented code using standard HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. Custom WordPress Development: Build, enhance, and maintain custom themes and plugins that support Bellweather’s internal websites and digital tools. Template & Component Creation: Develop flexible blocks, templates, and reusable components that streamline internal workflows. Site Performance Optimization: Audit websites and improve site speed, Core Web Vitals, accessibility, and overall technical SEO. Technical Quality Assurance: Conduct thorough testing across browsers, devices, and WP Engine environments to ensure stable, high-quality deployments. Security & Compliance: Implement best practices for WordPress security, version control, and update management. Scale & Maintain: Content System Enhancements: Improve backend usability for internal teams, including refining admin interfaces, custom fields, workflows, and automation where needed. Platform Maintenance and Hosting: Manage plugin updates, WordPress core updates, staging environments, and performance monitoring within WP Engine. Troubleshooting & Debugging: Diagnose and resolve technical issues to ensure reliable and uninterrupted digital operations for maintenance clients. Documentation: Maintain clear, organized technical documentation for themes, plugins, and development workflows. Collaboration & Communication: Team Collaboration: Work closely with strategy, design, and content teams to translate business goals into intuitive, scalable digital solutions. Technical Consultation: Provide recommendations on architecture, feasibility, and best practices for new digital initiatives. Note this role may involve client-facing meetings, presentations, and walk-throughs. Stakeholder Support: Offer ad-hoc development support for presentations, prototypes, internal tools, and special projects. Required Skills and Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in graphic design, computer science, computer programming or a related field. 2–4 years of web development experience, with a strong portfolio showcasing previous work. Strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Understanding of mobile-first design principles and cross-browser and device compatibility. Understanding of WCAG/ADA Compliance principles. Experience with CMS Platforms, primarily WordPress, but also including Drupal, Squarespace, etc. Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders. Strong ability to multi-task and work in a fast-paced environment. Organized workspace conducive for remote work, inspiring creativity and professionalism.
