What You Will Do onX is seeking a Backend Software Engineer with a passion for content and the great outdoors. In this role, you’ll help improve and streamline our data processing systems, bringing mapping data to life so users can seamlessly explore and engage with our products. While this role is primarily focused on backend development, we’re excited about engineers who are curious about the full stack and eager to expand their skills by contributing to web frontend work when opportunities arise. This role will report to the team’s Engineering Manager. As an onX Backend Engineer, your day-to-day responsibilities would look like: (Essential Job Duties) Build and maintain scalable services to support new features and products Use Golang and best practices, build reusable code and libraries for future use Use modern JavaScript, TypeScript, Vue, and best practices, build reusable code and libraries for future use Write unit and integration tests, maintaining adequate coverage Assist in deploying and managing services in Kubernetes Collaborate in architectural decisions, across teams Work with SRE and your team to define SLO for services and help monitor and maintain them Mentor other engineers in your team and across the organization LOCATION onX has created a thriving distributed workforce community across several US locations. This position can be performed from an onX corporate office, “Basecamp,” or “Connection Hub”. Corporate Offices: onX was founded in Montana with offices in Missoula and Bozeman. If you prefer to work in an office at least part of the time this is a great option. Basecamps: onX’s Basecamps are established virtual workforce communities where a sizable number of distributed team members group for work, volunteering, socializing, and adventure. Our current Basecamps are located within a 90-mile radius of the following: Austin, TX; Charlotte, NC; Denver, CO; Kalispell, MT; Minneapolis, MN; Portland, OR; Salt Lake City, UT; and Seattle, WA. Connection Hubs: onX’s Connection Hub locations are smaller, emerging communities of distributed team members. What You’ll Bring Bachelor’s degree in computer science or equivalent experience. Four (4) or more years of relevant industry experience as a software engineer, where API development was your professional focus for three (3) or more years and web development for one (1) or more years. Recent experience with modern web frontend technologies, using TypeScript and any modern web framework (React, Vue, etc) Expertise in building and debugging scalable distributed services using Golang, REST, and GraphQL. Ability and desire to traverse the full stack. You can trace an issue from the browser all the way to the service container. You are well-versed in modern API and systems design and development.
