In this role, you will design and build backend services and APIs while also owning how those services are deployed, operated, and scaled in production. You will work in a fast-paced environment building robust backend systems, partnering closely with platform and ML engineers, and ensuring that the software you build is reliable, observable, and secure in production. This role offers significant influence over our backend architecture and DevOps practices, using modern technologies including AWS, Kubernetes, and NVIDIA GPUs. What You’ll Do (Role) Backend Engineering (Primary) Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs that power the Promethium platform Implement scalable, maintainable service architectures with a focus on performance, reliability, and security Collaborate with product, ML, and frontend engineers to define and deliver backend functionality Write high-quality, testable code (primarily in Python) and participate in code reviews Improve backend observability through logging, metrics, and tracing Platform & Operations (Secondary, Service-Focused) Own the deployment and production lifecycle of backend services you build Design, deploy, and maintain cloud infrastructure on AWS to support backend workloads Manage and operate containerized services on Kubernetes (EKS), including deployments, scaling, and troubleshooting Automate infrastructure provisioning and service configuration using Terraform and Infrastructure-as-Code Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines to enable fast, reliable backend releases Apply security best practices and contribute to compliance efforts (e.g., ISO 27001) Troubleshoot production issues and work with the team to continuously improve system reliability Document service architecture, operational patterns, and runbooks Participate in a shared on-call rotation focused on service ownership, not just infrastructure Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field (or equivalent practical experience) 3+ years of backend software engineering experience, with production systems Strong proficiency in Python and backend service development Experience deploying and operating backend services on AWS Hands-on experience with Kubernetes in production environments Experience using Terraform or similar IaC tools Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines (GitHub Actions, GitLab CI, Jenkins, etc.) Solid understanding of containerization (Docker) and service-oriented architectures Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work across engineering disciplines Preferred Qualifications Experience designing distributed systems or platform services Background working in SOC 2 or ISO 27001–compliant environments Experience with GPU-backed workloads, ML platforms, or HPC systems Familiarity with GitOps tools (ArgoCD, Flux) Experience with observability stacks (Prometheus, Grafana, Datadog) Exposure to service meshes (Istio, Linkerd, Kong Mesh) Experience with GCP or Azure in addition to AWS Compensation & Benefits Base Salary: $140,000 - $160,000 In addition to competitive base salaries, qualified candidates are eligible for participation in a corporate bonus program and equity. Salary may vary by location. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location. Within the range, individual pay is determined by factors including job-related skills, competencies, experience, market demands, internal parity, and relevant education or training.
