Role Summary: 

We are seeking an Applied Scientist in AI and language modeling to build, train, fine-tune, evaluate, and deploy models for applications in healthcare and patient advocacy. An ideal candidate will be able to train and evaluate language models to perform both classification and next token prediction with PyTorch, map laboratory evaluation results to likely business outcomes and risks, and have a strong enough engineering foundation to collaborate with the engineers who will wrap the models into our products. Experience with healthcare data or working in another highly regulated industry is a plus.

As the first applied research hire on our AI team, you’ll work with significant autonomy, set high technical standards, and help shape the foundations of how we build, evaluate, and deploy language models as the team grows.



Key Responsibilities: 

Build, train, and evaluate models for our key tasks:
Zero-shot relevance classification of health records given information about a drug and medical condition.
Medical question answering grounded by a patient’s medical history.
Design monitoring criteria to detect and flag probable errors, model drift, and adversarial inputs.
Design data capture criteria to collect future training data from our production systems.
Collaborate with the engineering team to bring these designs into production.
Lay the cultural and technical foundations of our research and development wing.
All while strictly adhering to HIPAA and other relevant regulations.
Required Qualifications: 

Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related field or equivalent industry experience in applied language modeling.
Experience training and evaluating language models.
Experience designing, curating, and collecting high quality data sets.
Experience using PyTorch to train & fine-tune language models, including:
Standard supervised pre-training.
Fine-tuning & transfer learning.
Distillation.
Reinforcement learning methods such as RLHF and DPO.
Strong engineering fundamentals including Python & SQL at minimum.
