Penstock is seeking an experienced SQL Developer to join our data operations team in a Microsoft Azure managed environment. This role focuses exclusively on SQL database development, data analysis, and management of medical claims data systems. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in relational database concepts, data wrangling, and healthcare data analytics, with the ability to independently manage multiple databases while ensuring data integrity and optimal performance in our rapidly evolving environment. This position is designed for a database professional who thrives in a healthcare data environment and can handle the complexities of medical claims data analysis. You will be responsible for developing and maintaining sophisticated SQL solutions that analyze large volumes of healthcare data while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and performance. The role requires someone who can think critically about database architecture, identify performance bottlenecks, and implement solutions that scale with our growing data needs. Our team operates in a collaborative environment with regular code reviews, daily stand-ups, and close partnership with business stakeholders who rely on our data systems for critical decision-making. You'll be working with sensitive healthcare information, requiring both technical expertise and an understanding of healthcare data standards and concepts. Key Responsibilities Database Development & Architecture Design, develop, and maintain complex SQL queries, stored procedures, functions, and triggers in Microsoft Azure SQL environments Create and optimize database schemas, tables, partitions, indexes, and constraints for medical claims data processing Develop sophisticated data metrics and error logging mechanisms to ensure system reliability and auditability Implement and maintain database security measures appropriate for healthcare data handling Manage multiple databases independently, ensuring consistent performance and reliability across all systems Large Volume Data Management Perform advanced data wrangling and transformation of medical claims data from various sources and formats Conduct comprehensive data analysis and validation to ensure accuracy and completeness of healthcare information Implement data integrity testing protocols and control totals validation for large-volume medical data imports Develop and maintain data quality control processes that meet industry standards and best practices Create and manage data validation rules specific to medical coding, billing, and claims data analytics Performance Optimization & Continuous Improvement Continuously analyze groups of related stored procedures to identify performance improvement opportunities Re-engineer existing database solutions to increase efficiency and reduce processing time Optimize query performance through advanced indexing strategies, partitioning, and query tuning techniques Monitor database performance metrics and proactively address bottlenecks in high-volume healthcare data analysis Implement best practices for handling large-scale healthcare data operations Data Analysis & Reporting Develop complex ad-hoc SQL queries to support business intelligence, analytics and troubleshooting requirements Create data analysis solutions that provide insights into data movement patterns, trends, and anomalies Support reporting requirements and compliance audits with accurate data extraction and validation Collaborate with business stakeholders to understand business concepts, data centric requirements and translate them into technical solutions Collaboration & Communication Participate in regular peer reviews and maintain high coding standards for database development Contribute to daily stand-up meetings and continuous development processes Collaborate effectively with business data consumers to understand requirements and provide technical guidance Document database designs, processes, and procedures with clear technical specifications Provide technical support and troubleshooting for database and data related issues using DevOps ticketing system. Required Qualifications Technical Expertise 5+ years of experience in SQL development with specific focus on healthcare or medical claims data analysis Deep understanding of relational database concepts, normalization, and database design principles High level of expertise in Microsoft Azure SQL Database, Azure SQL Managed Instance, or SQL Server Advanced proficiency in T-SQL, stored procedures, functions, triggers, and complex query development Extensive experience with database performance tuning, indexing strategies, and query optimization Strong background in data integrity testing, control totals validation, and data quality control processes Bachelor’s degree in computer science, Information Systems or Healthcare Informatics is preferred Database Management Skills Ability to independently manage multiple databases in a production environment Experience with database schema design, table partitioning, and index optimization Proficiency in developing data metrics and error logging mechanisms Strong analytical skills for identifying and resolving database performance issues Experience with large-volume data analysis and validation Soft Skills Excellent communication skills for technical and business stakeholder interactions Strong problem-solving abilities and attention to detail Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to team collaboration Experience with agile development methodologies and code review processes Adaptability to work in a constantly evolving technical environment Preferred Qualifications Familiarity with Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, or other Azure data services Familiarity with Snowflake and/or Databricks (or any other modern Data Warehouse solution) Knowledge of healthcare industry standards and processes Experience with healthcare analytics and related data management Previous experience in healthcare technology or medical claims data analytics organizations
