About the role: We are seeking a passionate Software Engineer Contractor to join our development team for RescueRoute, an innovative mobile application that transforms food rescue logistics. This position offers a unique opportunity to work on technology with direct social impact, helping to reduce food waste and address food insecurity. This role is 36 hours per week and will take place between July 7, 2025 to September 12, 2025. This role is grant funded and cannot exceed a rate of $62.50 per hour. About RescueRoute: RescueRoute is a groundbreaking mobile application developed through a collaboration between FoodRecovery.org and Epic-Cure. Our platform streamlines the redistribution of surplus food by connecting truck drivers who have rejected food deliveries with nonprofit organizations that can put this food to good use. The application was initially developed with Hack4Impact at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Responsibilities: You will contribute leadership to leveraging technology and data to increase our impact and support our partners in achieving sustainable community driven outcomes. Working on this project, you will support the organization’s goals and improve the delivery of our programs. This opportunity offers a unique opportunity to work on technology with direct social impact, helping to reduce food waste and address food insecurity. Required Qualifications: College Graduate with a BA/BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (or equivalent practical experience) 3+ years of experience in software development Self-starter with small-team experience Proficiency in JavaScript Experience with ReactNative mobile application development framework Basic understanding of database systems and API integration (preferably Firebase) Familiarity with Git/Github version control Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail Excellent communication and teamwork abilities Preferred Qualifications: Experience with push notification systems and real-time data synchronization Knowledge of geolocation services and mapping APIs Familiarity with authentication systems and secure data handling Experience with Agile development methodologies Previous work on projects with social impact Understanding of UX/UI design principles What we offer: Opportunity to work on technology with meaningful social impact Mentoring and management of a junior developer Collaborative and supportive work environment Professional growth and skill development Nondiscrimination policy: FoodRecovery.org is an equal opportunity employer.
