About the Role As an Engineering Lead, you’ll play a pivotal role on a cross-functional squad delivering user-facing features and technical improvements. This role combines hands-on technical contribution (~60%) with squad-level leadership, team mentorship, and collaborative delivery with Product and Design. You’ll write and ship code regularly while guiding your team through technical decisions and challenges. You’ll work closely with Product and Design to surface priorities, reduce technical debt, and continuously improve how we deliver. You’ll also have a small number of direct reports, giving you the opportunity to support their growth, provide feedback, and help them do their best work. What You’ll Own Technical Contribution (~60%) You’ll stay hands-on, regularly writing and shipping code—both for user-facing features and core platform improvements. You’ll set the bar for engineering excellence through high-quality implementation, thoughtful code review, and deep ownership of your work. Team & Technical Leadership You’ll play a key leadership role on your squad, alongside another senior engineer, to guide how the team builds and operates. Responsibilities include: Shaping technical direction and architecture Ensuring engineering contributes constructive feedback on design and for product—focused on cost, complexity, and risk—while trusting design and product to lead in solution ideation Fostering an inclusive, psychologically safe environment where engineers feel comfortable sharing ideas, asking questions, and challenging decisions constructively Advocating for engineering priorities like tech debt and tooling Mentoring team members and supporting their growth Product & Delivery Collaboration You’ll work cross-functionally to ensure the squad consistently delivers meaningful outcomes. This includes: Partnering with Product and Design to align on scope, trade-offs, and feasibility Coordinating engineering workflows and removing delivery blockers Driving clarity around priorities, progress, and risks Communication & Influence You’ll be a connector within the org—helping bridge teams and disciplines. You’ll: Communicate technical decisions clearly to stakeholders Align the team through consensus-driven problem solving Contribute to broader engineering process and culture Who You Are Must-Haves 7+ years of experience in software engineering, including technical leadership on a cross-functional team. Demonstrated experience solving complex technical problems collaboratively and driving consensus. Strong experience building customer-facing SPAs and backend services using modern full-stack frameworks (experience with AWS, C#, React, or Ember.js is a plus, but not required). Familiarity with agile practices, lean delivery, and iterative product development. Experience mentoring and leveling up other engineers through pairing, feedback, and coaching. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to tailor technical details to diverse audiences. Proven ability to balance IC work with coordination, delivery, and leadership responsibilities. Able to thrive in fast-moving, ambiguous environments with a high sense of ownership. Nice-to-Haves Experience working in a startup or fast-growing environment. Familiarity with distributed systems or service-oriented architectures. Track record of improving engineering process, quality, or team collaboration. Emphasis on inclusion, psychological safety, and team culture. Strong documentation and async-first communication habits.
