Since its inception, StartEngine has helped over 550 companies raise more than $1.5B from retail investors, with investments starting at as little as $100.The RoleWe are looking for a Backend Java Engineer to join our growing engineering team and help power the next generation of our equity crowdfunding platform. This role is perfect for someone who thrives in a modern cloud-based environment and enjoys building scalable, secure, and highly available systems.You will be responsible for architecting and delivering backend services that leverage AWS, containerization, microservices, APIs, and RDS databases. You’ll work closely with our product leaders, frontend developers, and other engineers to deliver features that help entrepreneurs raise capital and investors access exciting opportunities.What You'll DoDesign, build, and maintain backend services and APIs in Java/Spring Boot.Develop and scale microservices deployed in containers (Docker/Kubernetes).Architect and optimize data solutions using AWS RDS (PostgreSQL/MySQL).Ensure high availability, fault tolerance, and security across cloud-based systems.Implement efficient CI/CD pipelines for deploying and monitoring services.Collaborate with cross-functional teams to turn product requirements into technical solutions.Conduct code reviews and contribute to engineering best practices.What We're Looking For3+ years of professional backend development experience (Java preferred).MUST live and work in the United States.Strong hands-on experience with AWS services (ECS, EKS, S3, RDS, etc.).Proficiency in building and scaling RESTful APIs.Solid understanding of microservices architecture and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes).Strong background with relational databases and data modeling (preferably RDS with PostgreSQL/MySQL).Knowledge of multithreading, concurrency, and performance optimization.Excellent problem-solving and communication skills.Bonus Points If You HaveExperience in FinTech, payments, or compliance-driven industries.Familiarity with event-driven systems (Kafka, RabbitMQ, etc.).Exposure to GraphQL or gRPC.Contributions to open-source or personal projects that show off backend expertise.Perks & Benefits100% covered Medical/Dental/Vision - pick your own plan (Anthem Blue Cross)Generous Equity packageUnlimited PTO and sick daysPaid WeWork Usage (optional)100% RemoteTeam Off-sites and Celebration DinnersPaid Maternity/Paternity leave401K programFlexible hoursBe part of one of the fastest growing parts of the FinTech IndustryA chance to work with a highly profitable and rapidly expanding startup (not VC funded)
