While our roots are in San Francisco, our growing team has members in several countries across many time zones.  We’re always working to find the perfect balance of effective approaches to distributed work, while maintaining the direct personal connections that help us work better together and love our jobs.As an applied AI software engineer on our team, you'll be working on researching, designing, prototyping, and implementing our next generation of software at FOSSA.  While still working closely with the entire Engineering and Product departments, the R&D team focuses on more experimental software development that will define the future of our company.  Our current focus is around using a combination of static analysis, deterministic algorithms, along with LLM interactions, to provide our users with reliable, time-saving, and automated solutions to keeping their projects and the dependencies they use as healthy as possible  The R&D team follows a lightweight process that lets the team move fast and learn from experiments quickly.  Come help us create the future of FOSSA!In this role you will:Work closely with our R&D business unit to research, plan, design, prototype, and build the future of FOSSAOwn user-impacting functionality from conception to completionBuild and scale the most valuable prototypes into productionHave significant ownership in our technical architecture and R&D roadmapPrimarily work in Typescript, but touch a variety of codebases in other languages, such as Rust, Haskell, or GoContribute to structured analysis of various languages (Java, Python, others) our customers useExperiment with LLMs and context engineering and benchmark the results to ensure we accomplish maximal value and consistency from themAbout you:Experience working on greenfield projects as part of small teamsExperience building and deploying software in high-velocity environmentsExperience building and supporting scalable SaaS products and featuresExperience with relational databases and writing performant SQL queriesExperience interacting with LLM APIs as a serviceEnjoy combining the latest technologies and tools with best practices to accelerate developmentPassionate about getting creative with AI to work around its shortcomings in creating automated solutions to complex problemsInterest in the art of programming languages (design, compilers and syntax parsing, etc)You're comfortable navigating complex domains and building intuitive software for themYou thrive in an environment that prefers prototypes over proposalsProactive in sharing ideas and informed opinions with othersAttention to detail and quality to anticipate edge cases ahead of timeA growth mindset and willingness to learn new thingsYou have 6+ years of experience working as a backend or fullstack engineerWhy you'll love working at FOSSA:Amazing team culture and environmentNamed by Built In as Best Start-up to work for 2024, 2025 and Forbes 2022Competitive salary and equity packageComprehensive benefits package (health, dental, vision, 401k)Opportunities for professional growth and career developmentFully RemoteUnlimited PTOFOSSA is an equal-opportunity employer.
