Our client in the cross-border payments industry is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to design, build, and maintain robust backend systems that support secure, scalable, and high-performance financial platforms operating across multiple regions.

Job Summary

The Senior Backend Engineer will be responsible for developing and maintaining core backend services that power cross-border transaction processing, data management, and business-critical systems. This role requires strong expertise in system design, database architecture, performance optimization, and security best practices. The engineer will play a key role in ensuring system reliability, scalability, and compliance while collaborating closely with cross-functional teams and mentoring junior engineers.

Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain scalable, reliable, and secure backend systems that support cross-border financial operations.
Build and manage core services responsible for transaction processing, data storage, reconciliation, and reporting.
Architect backend solutions with a strong focus on performance, fault tolerance, scalability, and data consistency.
Collaborate with frontend engineers, product managers, and infrastructure teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions.
Optimize system performance through efficient database design, caching strategies, and background processing.
Implement robust testing strategies, including unit, integration, and performance testing, to ensure system stability.
Monitor production systems, troubleshoot issues, and implement long-term fixes to improve reliability and uptime.
Ensure adherence to security best practices, data protection standards, and regulatory requirements relevant to cross-border financial systems.
Maintain clear technical documentation, including system architecture, data flows, and operational guidelines.
Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior and mid-level engineers, promoting best practices and code quality.
Continuously evaluate and adopt appropriate technologies, tools, and engineering practices to improve backend systems.
Requirements

First degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
Minimum of 5 years of backend engineering experience, with demonstrated ownership of complex systems.
Strong proficiency in one or more backend languages such as Java, Python, Node.js, or Go.
Solid experience working with relational and non-relational databases, including schema design and performance tuning.
Experience building distributed systems and handling high-throughput, low-latency workloads.
Strong understanding of system security, data integrity, and access control in financial or regulated environments.
Experience with cloud infrastructure and deployment workflows (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure).
Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines, version control systems, and modern software development practices.
Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently in fast-paced environments.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with experience working in cross-functional teams.
