Job Description: WorkHero is building the AI-powered back office for the skilled trades, starting with the $50B+ HVAC industry. We have exciting traction and just closed a $5M seed round to expand our engineering and product organization, as well as add additional services. We’re looking for a senior engineer to own and evolve the backend and AI systems that power our core workflows.What you’ll buildYou’ll work on a mix of classic backend and AI product infrastructure. For example:Integrations & ingestion: pull data from third-party systems (APIs/webhooks/files)AI workflows in production: tool-using agents, RAG/search, classification/extraction, and human-in-the-loop flowsEvals & monitoring: regression tests for prompts/workflows, quality metrics, drift detection, and cost/latency trackingScalable systems: queues and orchestration, retries, data modeling, and API design to support rapid product iterationSecurity & privacy: strong auth controls and safe handling of sensitive customer dataResponsibilitiesAnalyze requirements and propose innovative AI-native solutions to technical problemsWrite clean scalable codeTest and deploy features & servicesOptimize the performance of our AI systemsRespond to critical system issues and ensure continuous system reliabilityMentor team members and collaborate across teams, especially with product and subject matter expertsWork to understand the needs of our users and think creatively about how to solve design challenges in your workThis is a Remote role. We expect Minimum 4 hours overlap with WorkHero team (11am-3pm ET).QualificationsSenior-level backend experience (typically 5+ years) shipping production systems that you’ve ownedStrong proficiency in a typed backend language (TypeScript preferred; comparable experience welcome)Hands-on experience with LLM-powered features (usage, prompting, optimization, etc), AI frameworks (Langchain, etc), and AI architectures (RAG, reranking, etc)The ability to work with infrastructure as code (terraform), cloud, and CI/CD systems. We’re a small team, so we own the whole stack!A deep understanding of a modern web and AI stack: Cloud, database, API, LLM, and webExcitement to leverage AI coding tools to their maximum benefit. We love Claude Code and Cursor and are constantly looking for better ways to leverage our time to build fast and build for scale.Nice to haveexperience with audio streaming and/or building AI voice featuresexperience with workflow automation tools like n8n or Lindyexperience with HVAC or back-office business workflowsexperience with mobile dev, especially Expo and/or React Nativeexperience specifically with AWS and how to get the most out of key AWS servicesWe are committed to creating a diverse and inclusive work environment.
