The candidate’s work will involve the development of the wave model WAVEWATCH III® within regional and global domains, testing and evaluating wave model performance both for standalone and coupled applications, and supporting integration of the wave model into end-to-end systems.Responsibilities:Duties of the Support Scientist for Operational Wave Modeling Development will include the following:The candidate will perform the job duties in an independent, collaborative and initiative way, applying innovative methods for the primary work areas. The candidate will work with others on wave forecast system improvements and for transition-to-operations, and will also work with external collaborators to develop and improve the wave modeling component for use within the Unified Forecast System (UFS) framework.Qualifications:The Support Scientist for Operational Wave Modeling Development selected should have the following:Knowledge of spectral wave models (like WAVEWATCH III), in particular for real-time applications.Command of theoretical knowledge of weather, physical or coastal oceanography with a degree in meteorology, physical oceanography, physics, coastal engineering or a related field.Experience in running numerical models on High Performing Computer (HPC) platforms using MPI, OpenMP, Slurm, LSF, etc.Is familiar with modern software development practices, particularly version control software.Advanced skills and knowledge of modern programming languages and object-oriented languages, such as FORTRAN90 and Python.Experience working in a UNIX environment with advanced shell scripting languages and familiar with running complex jobs. The Ideal Support Scientist for Operational Wave Modeling Development selected will have the following:Experience with coastal coupled applicationsExperience with rip current, water level, and/or coastal impact prediction to complement core wave modeling.Familiarity applying machine learning or AI techniques to enhance wave forecasting and model performance.Experience in model evaluation, data post-processing and statistical analysis including accuracy and uncertainty analysis for a wide variety of oceanographic and meteorological data setsDemonstrated ability to work efficiently in a team environment and communicate effectively using good oral and written communication skillsThe candidate selected will ideally have at least a Master’s Degree, and 3+ years of relative experience.  About Lynker Lynker is a growing, employee owned, small business, specializing in professional, scientific and technical services.
