Job Description: What you'll do

Design, develop, and maintain backend systems primarily using Ruby on Rails, ensuring security, performance, reliability, and maintainability.

Support front-end implementation using React and JavaScript where needed to enable full-stack feature development.

Participate in technical design discussions and contribute to scalable and resilient architecture decisions.

Integrate with VA backend services through secure and reliable APIs.

Monitor system health and troubleshoot production issues using observability tools and dashboards (e.g., Datadog).

Apply accessibility, security, and performance best practices throughout the software development lifecycle.

Write clean, testable, well-documented code and collaborate through GitHub.

Work closely with product managers, designers, and researchers to deliver features that meet user needs and business priorities.

Participate in agile ceremonies including sprint planning, retrospectives, and backlog refinement within a 2-week sprint cadence.

What we're looking for

5+ years of software engineering experience
Proficiency with React, JavaScript, Yarn, NodeJS, and modern frameworks and tooling.
Experience with Ruby on Rails or similar backend frameworks for API development.
Strong understanding of RESTful APIs, data modeling, and integration patterns with third-party services.
Familiarity with automated testing, CI/CD pipelines, and agile development practices.
Commitment to accessibility, security, and government compliance standards.
Proven ability to work in highly collaborative, mission-driven teams.
Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
