As our first Technical Lead you will both architect and code the core platform and recruit, mentor, and manage a lean, high-impact engineering pod (3-5 developers). You’ll collaborate daily with clinical informatics, data science, and regulatory teams to bring HIPAA-compliant, FDA-aligned software from zero to production in fast cycles. Key Responsibilities System Architecture & Hands-On Development Design and implement a cloud-native poly-omics data platform (ingestion → harmonization → analytics → API/UI delivery) using a modern micro-services approach. Build FHIR-native integrations with major EHRs (Epic, Cerner, Athena) and lab partners. Lead development of AI pipelines that combine LLMs, graph analytics, and ML models for genomic + microbiome interpretation. Team Leadership & Process Hire, onboard, and coach backend, frontend, and DevOps engineers; establish lightweight agile rituals and coding standards. Guide the team in balancing tech debt vs. feature velocity; champion test automation, CI/CD, observability, and security best practices. Coordinate cross-functionally with product, clinical, and regulatory to translate clinical workflows into shippable software. Compliance & Quality Implement and document HIPAA, SOC 2, and (future) FDA CDS/LDT requirements within the SDLC. Own technical risk mitigations around PHI, genomic data privacy, and AI explainability. Strategic Influence Evaluate build-vs-buy decisions (e.g., variant-calling pipelines, LIMS, LLM vendors). Contribute to product roadmap, partner due-diligence, and fundraising/enterprise sales technical diligence. Minimum Qualifications 7+ years total engineering experience, including 2+ years leading small, high-performance teams. Deep proficiency in Python / TypeScript and one JVM/Scala or Go language; comfortable moving across the stack. Proven track record architecting cloud systems on AWS (preferred), GCP, or Azure, employing Kubernetes, serverless, or containerized micro-services. Hands-on experience with bioinformatics or clinical data (VCF/BAM/FASTQ, FHIR/HL7, or lab LIMS). Working knowledge of modern ML/AI workflows (TensorFlow/PyTorch, Transformers, or graph ML). Strong grasp of data security, encryption, IAM, and HIPAA/SOC 2 controls. Excellent written and verbal communication; able to translate complex technical decisions to clinical and business stakeholders. Preferred Qualifications Prior build-out of a regulated healthcare, digital therapeutics, or diagnostics platform (FDA 21 CFR Part 11, SaMD, LDT pipelines). Familiarity with genomics pipelines (GATK, Nextflow, WDL), microbiome taxonomic profiling, and pharmacogenomics knowledgebases (PharmGKB, ClinVar). Experience integrating commercial LLM APIs or fine-tuning domain-specific language models. Exposure to real-time streaming (Kafka, Kinesis), graph databases (Neo4j), and SQL/NoSQL hybrid architectures. Tech Stack & Tools (Indicative) Python · FastAPI · TypeScript/React + Next.js · PostgreSQL + TimescaleDB · Neo4j · AWS (EKS, Lambda, S3, Aurora, SageMaker) · Terraform · GitHub Actions · Datadog · FHIR R4 · OpenAI / Hugging Face · Nextflow/GATK Success Metrics (First 12 Months) MVP Launch: Secure ingestion of WGS + lab data, AI-curated report generation, and Epic App Orchard demo within 6 months. Quality & Compliance: SOC 2 Type I and HIPAA audit readiness; ≥95 % automated test coverage on core services. Team Growth: Hire and retain a founding engineering pod with eNPS ≥ 50 and sprint velocity improvements ≥15 % quarter-over-quarter. Compensation & Benefits Competitive salary + early-stage equity · 100 % remote flexibility · Comprehensive health/dental/vision · Annual professional development budget · Option to attend leading genomics/AI conferences.
