Job Description: About the Role
Billing Union Inc. is seeking a Founding FullStack Software Engineer to join our core team in Chicago. As an early team member, you'll help shape the architecture, product, and engineering practices from the ground up.
Our platform empowers users to save money on their monthly bills through AI-powered document processing and collective negotiation. The system includes user-facing apps, an admin dashboard, support ticketing, and real-time analytics — and we’re just getting started.
Key Responsibilities
 Design, develop, and deploy scalable, secure full-stack features using Next.js, Node.js, and MySQL
 Build and maintain user flows: authentication (email/OAuth), bill upload, AI-powered data extraction, real-time previews
 Develop backend APIs with robust error handling, input validation, and role-based access control
 Integrate and maintain AWS services (Elastic Beanstalk, RDS, S3, SNS, SES, EBS, EC2)
 Develop and enhance the admin panel, including user and role management, support ticket workflows, and real-time bill processing insights.
 Collaborate closely with design and product to build responsive, accessible UIs
 Implement client-side and server-side security: JWT auth, bcrypt, reCAPTCHA v3, rate limiting
 Monitor production via Sentry and ensure high reliability and performance
 Write clean, maintainable, and well-documented code with version control best practices
 Contribute to sprint planning, technical scoping, and team knowledge sharing

Qualifications & Skills:

 Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
 Proficiency in JavaScript/TypeScript, React 19, Node.js, and Express.js
 Solid experience with MySQL, including schema design and query optimization
 Familiarity with Material UI, Tailwind CSS, and animation libraries like Framer Motion
 Strong grasp of RESTful API design and authentication strategies (JWT, OAuth via Passport.js)
 Hands-on experience with cloud-based services like AWS Elastic Beanstalk, RDS, S3, SNS, SES, EBS, EC2 and general DevOps awareness
 Experience handling file uploads (Multer), image processing (Sharp), and working with external APIs
 Comfort using tools like axios, react-toastify, and Recharts for modern web UX
